SF journalist says they were banned from Wiener Election Night watch party

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- A reporter from Mission Local was banned from Scott Wiener's Election Night watch party on Tuesday, the SF-based outlet said. Mission Local posted on X around 8 p.m., saying its reporter was banned from the event in San Francisco.

The outlet claims Wiener is banning them due to its perceived bias on the Israel-Palestine conflict.

"The campaign cited a perception of bias in coverage of Wiener's position on Israel and Palestine," Mission Local tweeted. "Our reporter was turned away at the door."

"It's an unbecoming move from someone who could serve as San Francisco's next congressperson," Mission Local executive Joe Rivano Barros tweeted.

However, about an hour later around 9 p.m., it seems Wiener's team reversed course.

Mission Local's reporter was reportedly eventually let inside to cover the watch party.

"Our reporter, Io Yeh Gilman, was allowed into the event after Mission Local and the San Francisco Standard published pieces on Wiener’s initial decision, which his campaign said was made because of its perception of unfair coverage in Mission Local of Wiener’s position on Israel and Palestine," Mission Local says.

Wiener and San Francisco District 1 Supervisor Connie Chan are vying for the U.S. Congressional District 11 seat, which was previously held by now Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, who retires after holding the seat for 39 years.

Pelosi is endorsing Chan to succeed her. Follow along for the latest results on that race.

KRON4 has reached out to Wiener's campaign for comment. We are waiting for a response.
