Dexter McCoy has declared victory in the race for Fort Bend County judge, defeating Daniel Wong.
McCoy declared victory in a speech Tuesday night.
The election follows a turbulent period in Fort Bend County government involving County Judge KP George, who was suspended from office earlier this year amid ongoing legal proceedings.
Wong, a Republican and former Sugar Land City Council member, was appointed interim county judge in April following George’s suspension. However, his authority to continue servicing in that role was later disputed after the civil case that led to his appointment was dismissed.
McCoy, a Democrat who was elected Precinct 4 commissioner in 2022, campaigned on affordability, improving infrastructure and managing the county’s rapid population growth. Wong focused his campaign on government transparency, accountability and restoring public trust in county leadership.
Despite the title, the county judge does not preside over a courtroom. Instead, the position leads Fort Bend County Commissioners Court, which oversees the county’s budget and decisions involving roads, public safety, emergency management and other county services.
The winner will serve a four-year term beginning in January 2027.
