Derek Tran wins reelection in Congressional District 45, NBC News projects

Congressman Derek Tran will win reelection in Congressional District 45 after fending off Republican challenger Chuong Vo, NBC News projected Tuesday.

With 55% of the expected vote counted, Tran received nearly 60% of the vote, compared with Vo’s 40%.

Tran made history in 2024 when he became the first Vietnamese American congressman to represent the area, where Asian Americans make up the largest ethnic demographic.

After edging out then-incumbent Michelle Steel (herself a Korean immigrant) by just 653 votes, Tran, a son of Vietnamese refugees, defeated Vo, a retired police officer and another son of Vietnamese refugees.
